Dr. Jilllian (as she is known to her students) is a full-time university professor and "wandering academic" whose work reflects her training in anthropology and ethnographic research methods. Her interest areas include reproduction, cultural competence in health care, social change and development, and poverty, among others. She focuses on the Americas--including the U.S. and Costa Rica--and is especially concerned with social justice issues as they relate to gender equality, poverty alleviation, racial equality, and environmental sustainability. 

Her photographic work is an extension of her scholarly interests and she regards photography as a tool for social change.
